Making Sense of Bruins/Penguins First Period

A lot of stuff went on.

Brooks Orpik’s shoulder hit Loui Erikkson in the head less than 20 seconds into the game, which knocked Erikkson out of the game. No penalty was called though.

Chara retalied a little and got a penalty. Thornton tried to fight Orpik, but Orpik wouldn’t go.

Then later in the period, James Neal kneed a downded Marchand in the head.

It is at this point that, in a little scrum, Thornton finds Orpik and pulls him down to the ice, hitting him in the face twice.

The trainers had to get a stretcher on the ice (second time in as many games for the Bruins [Boychuk]). Thornton was ejected and will probably get a suspension of some kind, rightfully so.

With all that, it is 2-1 Pittsburgh after 1.
