Bloomberg – Sony Corp’s “American Hustle,” a film about a corruption sting set in the 1970s, racked up seven Golden Globe nominations last week, including best comedy, instantly becoming a top contender this awards season.
That was after the studio submitted the movie as a drama, according to people with knowledge of the situation. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which sponsors the Golden Globes, changed the designation because its nominations panel unanimously saw it as a comedy, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions were private.
Ever since I heard the cast for this movie, I was in. Bale, B Coops, Renner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Amy Adams. Can’t go wrong. It also didn’t hurt that they filmed this movie in and around Boston which was pretty cool.
But a comedy? I guess it does help its chances at winning, but let’s say it does indeed win “Best Comedy”, does it really count. I mean, David O. Russell’s The Fighter had many funny scenes with Bale as Dickie but it clearly wasn’t a comedy. I still want Bale in a full blown comedy though. Like a Hangover type movie. He’d be great.
